ARIZONA AUTOMOBILE THEFT AUTHORITY REPORTS 15% DECREASE IN 2024 VEHICLE THEFTS
Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Automobile Theft Authority (AATA), a division of the Arizona Department of Insurance and Financial Institutions (DIFI), reports that Arizona vehicle thefts decreased by 15% in 2024, marking a second straight year of decline. Current data compiled by the AATA’s Auto Crime Tracking (ACT) database shows that Arizona had 17,010 vehicles reported stolen in 2024, nearly 3,000 fewer than the 20,006 reported stolen in the ACT database in 2023.
“The AATA is encouraged by another decline in vehicle thefts in Arizona last year,” said James McGuffin, AATA Executive Director.
The AATA also reports the most commonly stolen vehicles in Arizona in 2024 have remained very consistent over the past two years with Chevrolet Silverados holding the #1 spot. Kias and Hyundais are once again over-represented on the list for certain 2011-2022 model years not equipped with an engine immobilizer – a feature that prevents the engine from starting unless the key is present. The table below shows the Top 10 Stolen Vehicles in Arizona in 2024.
The most recent report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) ranking all states based on the rate of theft shows Arizona’s rate at 268 vehicles stolen for every 100,000 residents, which places Arizona 19th among other U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia – an improvement of four positions from the previous year.
“To continue these declines,” McGuffin advises, “we remind all vehicle owners to park smart, take keys/fobs, lock doors and remove or conceal all valuables.”
